China to Include Australia and New Zealand in Visa-Free Countries

CANBERRA, June 17, 2024 — In a significant move to bolster international relations, Chinese Premier Li Qiang announced that China will include Australia and New Zealand in its list of unilateral visa-free countries. The announcement was made during a joint press meeting with Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and following a meeting with New Zealand Prime Minister Christopher Luxon.

Strengthening Ties with Australia
China is opening its doors even wider to the world, with Australia now joining China’s expanding visa waiver program. Premier Li Qiang stated during his official visit to Australia, “We agreed to provide each other with reciprocal access to five-year multiple entry visas for tourism, business, and visiting family members to better facilitate personal exchanges. China will also include Australia in its visa waiver program.”

New Zealand Joins the Visa-Free List
Similarly, during a meeting at the Government House in Wellington on June 13, 2024, Premier Li Qiang announced that New Zealand would also be included in China’s visa waiver program. This move is aimed at fostering greater convenience for Chinese citizens traveling to New Zealand and further enhancing bilateral relations.

Expanding Visa-Free Access
Since last year, China has been extending unilateral visa-free access to numerous countries. To date, China has implemented visa-free travel for citizens of France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Spain, Switzerland, Ireland, Hungary, Austria, Belgium, and Luxembourg.
Additionally, China has established mutual visa exemptions with Thailand, Singapore, Malaysia, and Georgia.

BEIJING, May 7, 2024 – To further facilitate international travel and exchanges, China has decided to extend the visa-free policy for citizens of France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Spain, Malaysia, Switzerland, Ireland, Hungary, Austria, Belgium, and Luxembourg until December 31, 2025. Citizens of these countries holding ordinary passports can enter China without a visa for business, tourism, family visits, or transit stays of up to 15 days.

To further boost tourism, the National Immigration Administration announced on May 15, 2024, that foreign tourist groups arriving by cruise ship at all Chinese coastal ports would be granted visa-free entry.
